Government to promote mini hydropower projects

The government has been mulling on the concept to promote mini hydropower projects in the country. The government is preparing to promote hydropower projects of up to 10 MW as mini hydro projects in the country, said secretary at the ministry of science, technology and environment Dr Somlal Subedi in an interaction today.

“The government is considering a policy to promote mini hydropower projects,” he said, adding that the country has tremendous opportunity for such projects. According to him, the ministry has been exploring the possibility of on-grid and off-grid projects in the category.

Micro hydropower projects below three megawatt have been providing electricity to around 300,000 people. About 2,000 hydropower projects are in operation in the country. The government has also been providing subsidy for alternative energy.
